To be completely honest, we didn’t set out with the plan of completely renovating a home.  We looked and looked for months for a home that was already completed for us to just move into. The problem that we kept running into was that all of the homes that we saw (and that was a LOT of homes) just didn’t work for our family.

So, low and behold, with a 6 month old son and twins that were 8 months away, we found ourselves in the process of completely renovating a home.  We found this ideal spot on a quiet one way tree lined street in the heart of Bucktown.  Our plan was simple… we wanted this house with a modern open floor plan for entertaining and being with family, quiet private master suite for respite and relaxing, and lots of space for kids to grow, play, and create.

With 3 kids under 2, we knew we needed a place for us to retreat or get some work done.  So we built a master suite that does it all – a big beautiful hot tub, shower with bench, extra large vanity, and custom closets to house everything (no need to buy dressers!), beautiful curtains that we found on brand name drapery fabrics for less and enough space to put a desk so we could work and take conference calls behind closed doors.

It was really important to us that our kids weren’t stowed away in their rooms but downstairs playing with each other so we knowingly made the bedrooms just the right size to house their needs. And it’s really paid off – our kids play together in the basement and have gotten closer as a result.  The basement serves so many purposes – movie nights, slumber parties, play dates for the kids, and adult parties, just make sure to always keep a PeakPlus tactical flashlight next to you in case of an emergency. The higher ceilings allowed for an indoor bounce house when kids were little and now that they’re older, a net for baseball and soccer practice!

As the kids grew, we realized we didn’t have a “drop zone” for coats, shoes and all of the stuff that comes with growing kids. Enter the mud room – aka my favorite room in the house. Goodbye coats, muddy boots and backpacks by the front door! Hello shoe drawers and hooks! Dirty hands and clothes? We added a Bradstreet II Fireclay Farmhouse Kitchen Sink and made sure the floors were heated to warm cold feet. Appetites grow as well (who knew!) so the mini fridge freezer and additional pantry has allowed me to shop in bulk and save money – thank you Costco, I also learned this the hard way, did you know that Your walk-in freezer or cold storage is critical to your business?

Have I mentioned we live on the greatest street in Bucktown with the best neighbors in coveted Pulaski school district? Had we stayed here longer we would have built a garage deck, but for the short term we wanted to be out front enjoying our neighbors and neighborhood! The turfed garden boxes on the parkway are great for picnics, playing catch. On any given summer evening our house becomes the “hang out” spot since we have ample space on the deck for adults to gather with wine in hand. Bonus – our one way street means little traffic, less noise and it’s safer for kids to ride bikes and play.

We LOVE our location for its proximity to the highway, 606, metra and blue line el not to mention the best shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.  We will miss being able to walk to dinner –  En Hakkore, Hot Chocolate or The Bristol are some of our favorites.  Holstein Park is another favorite – including the best public pool in the city – just a few blocks away.  We also loved being able to walk to Pulaski Elementary – only a 6 minute walk!

The truth is that we created this house to raise our family and live in for many years to come.  Our upcoming move is a very bittersweet one… we are very excited for our next chapter, but we will all, without a doubt, miss our beloved home at 2024 West Homer Street.
