This is a happy home; an easy place to live. Its halls have echoed with laughter and joy as we raised two children and later our four grandchildren who love to stay overnight, race down the long hallway and jump on our bed.

We have only 2 apartments to a floor each of which is virtually sound proof. There is plenty of room in the 3,000 square feet for your family.

399 West Fullerton KitchenWhen we found our apartment we knew it was perfect for family gatherings, parties, special events and just plain dinner parties. The kitchen has great storage space and boasts of all stainless steel top of the line appliances plus you will love the Corian Brand Countertops; a layout that lends itself beautifully to cooking, preparing and even cleaning up.

The breakfast area that is adjacent to the kitchen – and seats 6 – provides a perfect place for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family and is a launching pad to serving in the dining room and later as the place to gather the dishes. The original 1928 butler’s pantry and storage closet remains and the space is amazing. At the end of the hall is a huge utility closet.

399 West Fullerton ParlorWhat made it perfect? The lay out: entering through a gracious foyer into the exceptional living room, beyond which is a more than generous dining room with a built in marble buffet running the length of the west wall with storage below. The view of Lincoln Park from both the living room and dining rooms is beautiful in every season. A family room with a full bath with separate shower stall is east of the kitchen. Used for reading, gossiping and television watching, 10 dinner guests can eat there comfortably.

As you move south in the apartment along a long and elegant hallway with coved ceiling, one finds 3 master-sized bedrooms and two full baths, one with a separate shower stall. Each bedroom has 2 closets. There are 3 walk-in closets. There is a roomy coat closet in the front hall and another clothes closet in the long hallway. With all walls along the way, it is perfect for hanging art, family photos and other memorabilia. There is a large bookcase that holds at least 100 books.  Last and uncommon to similar units you may encounter, we have upgraded our home to include a dual-zoned Space Pak, (central air conditioning), with full humidification system.  This ensures that the unit is extremely comfortable no matter the season.

notebaert nature museumAs soon as we moved in we learned of the amenities and convenience of the building and living in Lincoln Park.  We are in the Lincoln Park High School and Lincoln Elementary School boundaries, touted as the some of best schools in the Chicago Public School system. Excellent private and parochial schools are either within walking distance or a short bus ride away (see a list of all local schools here). We are a short walk (1/2 block) to Clark Street, Lincoln Park (across the street) and the Zoo; the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, The Conservatory, playgrounds and North Pond restaurant. The beach and lakefront and almost endless bike paths are a short walk or bike ride to the east. The grocery store on Clark welcomed us as did the other, eclectic assortment of retailers, including a marvelous shoemaker, several cleaners, clothing stores and a variety of restaurants (see more local businesses here).

We discovered that there were two buses on Clark Street to take us to work and play and two (now four) buses on Stockton Drive, all less than a block from the front door to deliver us to Michigan Avenue, the loop and downtown or north to Wrigley Field, theater, restaurants and other venues. Restaurants within walking distance offer a mix of cuisines to please anyone’s palette. Some have changed over the years, but are replaced by new food choices.  (Find all the transit options using Google Transit)

399 W. Fullerton StudyWe love this full service building; the door is attended 24 hours a day. There are 3 elevators – one in the center of the building and one to service the east and west tenants. There is also a stair in the center between the units that leads directly to the first floor and rear exit to the building. The valet garage allows for one car per unit and has room for guest parking. (There is additional guest parking in neighboring garages.)  It is a family building and everyone enjoys watching the children grow up and move on to new adventures. Our holiday lobby tree is decorated with photos of the families in the building, especially the children. Each year it provides a chronology of how each has grown. Many are in costumes celebrating annual events. Most of the outstanding staff has been with us for many years. The snow never accumulates in front of the building. Flowers are delivered weekly to the stunning wood-paneled lobby and the small lawn in front is truly a garden. Bikes are stored in a special bike room and there is ample personal storage in the basement.

However, time marches on and there comes a time when you have to think about our future in new terms. We love our apartment. It is truly a 3,000 square foot horizontal single-family home with other homes above. We will miss it and know that the new owners will appreciate it as much as we do.
