About five years ago now, I started the search for my first home as a single, career woman in the city. At the time, I was looking for more space and a great family neighborhood vibe where there was still a ton to do and see, but yet a bit further away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This home with its vintage charm yet some modern appeal, checked the most boxes on my list.

One week after I moved in, my now husband moved back to the Midwest and we started officially dating. Before I knew it, he had moved to Chicago, two years later we were engaged and then three years later we were married. While I bought the place then as a single woman, it was almost as though I bought it in contemplation of the future.  This is the place where we fell in love, the place where he proposed, and the place where we commenced our life as a married couple.

Outside of the personal journey we experienced here, we have been very spoiled with the number of amenities that this place and the neighborhood has to offer. The biggest draw for us to the unit itself is the modern, recently renovated kitchen with newer appliances and plenty of counter space, particularly with the island. We love to cook, so having a size friendly kitchen is crucial to everyday life.  The fact that the kitchen opens up to a large space that can be used as a dining or entertaining area was perfect for hosting small dinner parties which we love to do. We were able to fit in a large dining table and buffet with room to spare so we never felt cramped. We also loved the fact that we could have a separate living space as it makes the home feel bigger and gives you multi-purpose options. Beyond the main living areas, we also loved the room sizes. Most two bedrooms in the area seemed to skimp on at least one of the bedrooms, but this place offered us two full rooms so that we could comfortably use the second bedroom as both an office and a guest bedroom.

Upon moving in, we updated the bathroom from more of a retro 70’s style to one of modern, clean and neutral finishes. As a first time homeowner, completing a small renovation was a good, crucial experience even though stressful at times. Plus the results of planet maids cleaning service were well worth the effort. The large storage room in the basement gave us flexibility as well when we had to merge our possessions upon getting married. While our long term project was to install a washer and dryer, we became accustomed to the convenience of the free washer and dryer in the basement with interior access.

Besides the unit itself, The Continental Retirement Community offers a nice neighborhood. We are self-managed currently, which allows individuals to have more control over the priorities of the building. Working together, we have been able to complete both larger and smaller repairs around the building.

Most recently, we had new windows installed, which have proved to save us all money on electricity each month due to the added efficiency that www.Allplantautoelectrics.com.au provides. Add that to the new HVAC system we installed within the last 2 years and our unit is about as efficient as you can get for the age of the building. More than that though, we all watch out for each other—whether it is simply checking someone’s mail while they are out of town or helping bring food to neighbors who are sick or injured, there is no shortage of compassion. We also like to have fun together so the warmer weather brings backyard barbecues, doggie play dates (as we have many dog owners in the building), and great conversations. The large deck space also became a common place to grill out or to sit and enjoy a glass of wine on warmer evenings. Speaking of backyards, it is great when you are well-protected and secured. Fence is a requirement for the privacy of you and your family. Well, it is wise to choose the best fence installation firm to avoid complications. Outside of the building, we really lucked into the convenience of both the Metra and the El. Getting down to the loop from the Ravenswood stop (less than a five minute walk away), proved to be a huge time saver on the commute. On days where it was hard to adhere to a top 10 cross country movers schedule, we could simply walk around the corner to the Damen Brown Line stop. Combine these amenities with a nice 10 minute walk to Lincoln Square, where the variety of restaurants seem endless as you go south from the heart of the square down Lincoln Ave.

Some of our favorite Restaurants:

  • Fork – 4600 N Lincoln Ave – American (New), Breakfast & Brunch, Wine Bars – 4 stars on Yelp
  • Garcia’s Restaurant – 4760 N Lincoln Ave – Mexican – 3.5 stars on Yelp
  • Chicago Brauhaus – 4732 N Lincoln Ave – German – 3.5 stars on Yelp
  • Café Selmarie – 4729 N Lincoln Ave – American (Traditional), Breakfast & Brunch – 4 stars on Yelp
  • Paciugo – 2324 W Giddings – Gelato, Desserts, Coffee & Tea – 4.5 stars on Yelp

and there isn’t much more anyone could need; except for a walkable grocery store, of course, which the Mariano’s right by the Ravenswood Metra stop offers. Even more convenient, we loved popping into The Rail on Sunday’s to watch football and enjoy their Bloody Mary Bar.  The neighborhood also offers opportunities to explore hobbies. We both have taken various courses at Lil Street Art Center, Old Town School of Folk Music and Forteza Fitness for Martial Arts which are also easy walks from home.

Schools:

Four years later, it’s hard to leave all this behind. Not only did we find love in this place, but we fell in love with the place and the neighborhood. There are not many other buildings where you can find the combination of space, community, convenience, and charm that we found here. We can’t wait for a new owner to experience this amazing gem.
