Chicago Home Partner for Haiti Relief Fund

by Amanda on February 12, 2010

With Valentine’s Day amongst us, you might expect me to discuss the festivities of theChicago Home Partner Support the Haitian Relief Efforts Hallmark holiday… perhaps telling you the most frugal ways to swoon your true love, or perhaps the coolest things to do with Fido during the winter months (I mean who else is your real true love?!?!).  And if you had these thoughts on a more typical year, you would probably be right.  However, we can all agree that 2010 is far from typical.  So, when I think about the hallmark holiday this year, I am forced to count my blessings.

On January 12th, 2010, the world got a very vivid reminder of just how lucky we are.  Sure our investments might have dwindled, our homes’ values have diminished and for some, the job market has proved more than trying.  But when a series of earthquakes ravaged the island country of Haiti, taking with it over 200,000 lives and leaving over 1.2 million homeless, we were shown the bigger picture.  Due to the connectivity of the world, we have watched from the comforts of our own homes, as these individuals have attempted to endure the devastation.  And no matter what whom we are those events put our lives into perspective.

The outpouring of aid from across the world for this tiny island nation has been amazing.  The Red Cross and many other wonderful organizations have taken front-line stances – contributing aid, assistance and food relief to the stricken.  And now, it is time for Chicago Home Partner to lend a hand as well.

Together, I view you as my extended family and, as always, together we will make a difference.  That is why on behalf of each of you, I have contributed one meal for a family of four to the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund.  It’s a small amount in comparison to the devastation that the country has endured, but every bit helps in situations such as these.

On a brighter note, I would like to share yet another blessing.  On February 5th, 2010, I had the opportunity to marry my best friend in sunny Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  Surrounded by family and friends, we celebrated the joining of our lives and were able to reflect on just how fortunate we are.

So, remember to take a step back and count your many blessings.  I bet you have more than you realize!
