Your Home for Everything Chicago
The former warehouse district known as West Loop is teeming with places to see and things to do, with festivals, parks, and galleries blending with the area’s trendy lofts and condominiums. It’s right next to the loop, making West Loop real estate particularly appealing to young urbanites who want to experience everything that the Windy City has to offer.
Skinner Park and Union Park offer baseball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, and even outdoor swimming, so they’re both popular with West Loop locals when the sun is out — there are even dog parks. For something a little more cultural, try one over 30 art galleries hidden in the area. Linda Warren Projects and Peter Miller Gallery are two popular options.
Residents also look forward to the annual Taste of Randolph Street. Essentially a local version of the larger Taste of Chicago, it runs through a June weekend each year, with various bands serenading attendees as they sample the best that Chicago chefs have to offer. Music then takes the stage completely during the Pitchfork Music Festival, with three days of top indie sounds.
West Loop has become famous for its restaurant scene in recent years, with nationally ranked chefs establishing some of the finest eateries around. Girl & The Goat is one example: run by Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard, it offers dishes that are both complex and delicious — but you’ll have to book well in advance!
You might also want to visit Little Goat Diner for their mouth-watering Fat Elvis waffles, Hot Crab dip, and Machos Nachos, or head down to Avec for French, Basque, and Mediterranean delicacies, including chorizo stuffed dates and pork shoulder.
When you’re in the mood for a drink instead of a bite, the Aberdeen Tap is a recommended destination. A casual bar with an astounding selection of beers and a charming outdoor patio, it’s a local favorite. For something a little different, pick up a French-inspired cocktail from one of the mixologists at Maude’s Liquor Bar or savor sake and Japanese whiskey at Booze Box.
West Loop is prized for its bohemian atmosphere, but it also offers plenty of schools, including:
West Loop is bordered on the north by W. Grand, on the south by I-290, on the east by I-90, and on the west by N. Ashland. Owing to its location directly west of Chicago’s downtown Loop, West Loop is something of a dream for commuters. The area itself is easily traversed by foot, though you can also use the bus system to travel quickly. If you need to go further afield, the CTA Green Line has stops at Lake Street, Ashland Avenue, and Clinton Street to take you into the Loop, while the Blue Line stops at Racine Avenue and Halsted Street to take your downtown.
